TV Mounting Guide: Wall Types, Hidden Wires and the Right Height
By Hudson Home Improvement 4 min read

A mounted TV frees up space and looks clean, but only if it is installed safely and the wires are managed. This guide covers the main decisions.
Know your wall
- Drywall: mount into studs, or use appropriate anchors rated for the TV weight.
- Plaster and lath: needs careful drilling to avoid cracking.
- Brick, stone and tile: requires the right bits and masonry anchors.
- Concrete: uses concrete anchors and a hammer drill.
Choose the right mount
A fixed mount sits closest to the wall. A tilting mount reduces glare when the TV is placed high. A full-motion mount extends and swivels, which is useful in corners and open rooms. Check the weight rating and the VESA pattern of your TV.
What height is best?
A good starting point is to place the center of the screen near eye level when you are seated. Mounting a TV above a fireplace is common but often too high, which can strain your neck, so consider a tilting mount.
Hide the wires
In-wall kits include a recessed power outlet and cable pass-throughs so nothing hangs below the TV. Use cable rated for in-wall use and follow electrical code. If you are not sure, hire a professional.
Soundbars and components
Plan where the soundbar, streaming devices and consoles will go before you cut anything. Running an extra HDMI line now is easier than later.
